The Story of Yogini Ekadashi
Yogini Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi (11th lunar day) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the Moon) in the Hindu month of Ashadha. According to the Puranas, observing this sacred fast is considered highly meritorious. It is believed that the blessings of this vrat (fast) destroy all sins, bring happiness and prosperity, and ultimately lead the devotee toward liberation (moksha).
The Mythological Story of Yogini Ekadashi
In ancient times, the city of Alakapuri was ruled by Kubera, the king of the Yakshas. He was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva and offered fragrant flowers brought daily from Lake Manasarovar for Lord Shiva's worship.
Kubera had a gardener named Hemamali, whose duty was to bring fresh flowers every day on time for Lord Shiva's worship. Hemamali's wife was named Vishalakshi, and he loved her deeply. One day, he became so absorbed in spending time with his wife that he forgot to bring the flowers on time. As a result, the scheduled worship of Lord Shiva could not be performed because Kubera had no flowers to offer.
When Kubera learned about this negligence, he became extremely angry. He summoned Hemamali to his court and punished him severely for neglecting his duty. Kubera cursed him to suffer from leprosy, fall to Earth, and endure separation from his beloved wife.
As soon as the curse was pronounced, Hemamali fell to Earth. His body became afflicted with leprosy, and he wandered through forests and mountains, living a life filled with pain and misery.
One day, while wandering, he reached the hermitage of the great sage Markandeya Rishi. He bowed before the sage and narrated the entire story of his curse and suffering.
Seeing his pitiable condition, Sage Markandeya said, "If you sincerely observe the fast of Yogini Ekadashi, which falls during the Krishna Paksha of the month of Ashadha, all your sins will be destroyed, and you will be freed from this curse."
Following the sage's advice, Hemamali observed the Yogini Ekadashi fast with complete faith and devotion. By the power of the vrat, his leprosy was cured. He regained his health, beauty, and radiance, was freed from Kubera's curse, and was reunited with his wife Vishalakshi. They thereafter lived a happy and peaceful life together.
