📖 Mythological Story (in brief)
According to Padma Purana, King Suketumaan and Queen Shaivya of Bhadravati city were childless. With the desire of getting a child, the king went to the forest where he heard about Putrada Ekadashi Vrat from the sages. He observed this fast according to the rules and as a result, after some time, he got a worthy son.
Once upon a time, in the Dwapara Yuga, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira asked Lord Shri Krishna:
“ O Lord! What is the name of the Ekadashi that falls during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan? What is the significance of this fast, and what is its story? Please tell me in detail.”
Lord Shri Krishna said:
“O Dharmaraja! The Ekadashi that falls during the Shukla Paksha of Shravan is known as Putrada Ekadashi. It is a highly auspicious Ekadashi dedicated to Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. By observing this fast with devotion and listening to its sacred story, a person attains great spiritual merit. Now I shall tell you its holy story.”
Long ago, there was a kingdom called Bhadravati, ruled by King Suketuman. The king was very righteous, compassionate, and devoted to the welfare of his subjects. His people lived happily, and there was no shortage of anything in the royal palace.
The king possessed immense wealth, elephants, horses, a large army, and every kind of luxury and comfort. His wife, Queen Shaivya, was also deeply religious and blessed with many virtuous qualities.
However, King Suketuman had one great sorrow in his life.
He had no children.
The king constantly worried about who would carry forward his lineage after him. He was also deeply concerned about his ancestors. He wondered who would perform the Shraddha and Pind Daan rituals for his ancestors after his death if he had no child.
Because of this worry, the king gradually became very unhappy.
One day, the king became so distressed that he decided to leave the palace and go alone into the forest. He mounted his horse and entered a dense forest.
The forest was vast and deserted. As the king continued riding, he traveled a great distance. He began to feel hungry and thirsty, but his worries were so overwhelming that he continued moving forward.
After some time, the king saw a beautiful lake.
The water of the lake was crystal clear. Beautiful trees surrounded it, and lotus flowers were blooming everywhere. On the banks of the lake, several sages and hermits were seated, meditating upon the Lord and reciting the Vedas.
The king dismounted from his horse and approached the great sages.
He folded his hands and respectfully bowed before them.
The sages blessed the king and asked him the reason for his sorrow.
The king humbly said:
“O great sages! I am King Suketuman of Bhadravati. I have everything I could possibly need, but I am childless. Because of this, my heart is always filled with sorrow. Please tell me of a way by which I may be blessed with a child.”
The sages listened carefully to the king.
Then they said:
“O King! Today is the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of Shravan. It is known as Putrada Ekadashi. If you observe this Ekadashi fast with faith and devotion and worship Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, your wish will certainly be fulfilled.”
The sages explained to the king the proper method of observing the Putrada Ekadashi fast.
The king immediately resolved to observe the fast with complete faith and devotion to Lord Vishnu.
On the day of Ekadashi, he took a holy bath, put on clean clothes, and worshipped Lord Shri Hari. He observed a fast throughout the day and spent his time meditating upon Lord Vishnu and singing devotional hymns.
At night, the king remained awake and worshipped Lord Vishnu with complete devotion.
Pleased with the king’s devotion and faith, Lord Shri Hari appeared before him.
Lord Vishnu blessed the king and said:
“O King! Your wish shall be fulfilled. You will be blessed with a worthy and radiant son.”
Overjoyed by the Lord’s blessing, the king returned to his kingdom.
After some time, Queen Shaivya gave birth to a beautiful and radiant son.
There was no limit to the happiness of King Suketuman and Queen Shaivya. The entire kingdom celebrated the joyous occasion.
The king wholeheartedly accepted the blessings of Lord Vishnu and the divine power of Putrada Ekadashi. His son grew up to be virtuous, righteous, and brave, and eventually took responsibility for ruling the kingdom.
Since then, it has been believed that observing Putrada Ekadashi with faith and devotion brings the blessings of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. This fast is considered highly auspicious for the blessing of children, their prosperity and progress, and the well-being of the family.

Dharmaraj Yudhishthir ne kaha:
“Hey Prabhu! Shravan maas ke Shukla Paksha mein aane wali Ekadashi ka kya naam hai? Is vrat ka kya mahatva hai aur iski katha kya hai? Kripya mujhe vistar se batayein.”
Bhagwan Shri Krishna ne kaha:
“Hey Dharmaraj! Shravan maas ke Shukla Paksha mein jo Ekadashi aati hai, use Putrada Ekadashi kaha jata hai. Yeh Bhagwan Shri Hari Vishnu ko samarpit ek bahut hi punya aur mangalkari Ekadashi hai. Jo vyakti shraddha aur bhakti se is vrat ko karta hai aur iski pavitra katha sunta hai, use dharmik punya prapt hota hai. Ab main tumhe iski pavitra katha sunata hoon.”

Raja ne apne ghode se utarkar un mahan rishiyon ke paas jaakar pranam kiya.
Rishiyon ne Raja ko aashirwad diya aur unse unke dukh ka karan poocha.
Raja ne vinamrata se kaha:
“Hey mahan rishiyon! Main Bhadravati ka Raja Suketuman hoon. Mere paas jeevan mein kisi bhi cheez ki kami nahi hai, lekin main santanheen hoon. Isi karan mera man hamesha dukhi rehta hai. Kripya mujhe koi aisa upay batayein jisse mujhe santan ka sukh prapt ho sake.”
Rishiyon ne Raja ki baat dhyan se suni.
Tab unhone kaha:
