The Story of Nirjala Ekadashi
Once, Yudhisthira asked Lord Shri Krishna about the significance of the Ekadashi falling during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Jyeshtha. Shri Krishna then asked Vedavyasa to describe it.
Vyasa explained that one should observe a fast on all Ekadashis. Hearing this, Bhimasena stated that he had an insatiable appetite and could not possibly fast on every Ekadashi throughout the year. He requested to be told of a single fast that would yield the spiritual merit of observing all the Ekadashis.
Vyasa then explained that the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha is known as Nirjala Ekadashi. On this day, one must abstain from both food and water from sunrise until sunrise the following day (only Achaman—sipping a small amount of water for purification—is permitted). On the day of Dwadashi, one should bathe, worship Lord Vishnu, donate items such as water, food, clothing, and cows to Brahmins, and only then partake in a meal.
Vyasa further explained that:
- The merit gained from this single fast is considered equal to that of observing all the Ekadashis throughout the year.
- Its influence destroys even the gravest of sins.
- Upon death, the devotee is taken to Lord Vishnu's abode not by the messengers of Yama (Yamadutas), but by the messengers of Vishnu (Vishnudutas).
- One who observes the fast, worships, donates, and keeps a night vigil with devotion ensures the well-being of themselves and many generations of their family.
- Merely listening to or narrating the story of this fast also yields immense spiritual merit.
Upon hearing Vyasa's words, Bhimasena began observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast; hence, it is also known as Bhimaseni Ekadashi or Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi.
