📖 Aja Ekadashi Vrat Katha (The Story)
Once, Sage Pulastya told King Yudhishthira:
“O King! The Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month is called ‘Aja Ekadashi’. Observing this fast destroys all sins of a person and grants liberation.”
“O Dharmaraj! Now listen to its story—”
🌸 Beginning of the Story
In ancient times, there was a mighty and truthful king named Harishchandra. He was unique in his adherence to truth and dharma.
But once, due to Sage Vishwamitra’s command, he had to give up his kingdom, his queen, and even his son.
The king became poor and worked as a servant at a cremation ground under a Chandala (outcaste). There, he was even forced to cremate his own beloved son with his own hands.
🌸 Sage Gautama’s Advice
When King Harishchandra was suffering great pain and sorrow, Sage Gautama came there. Seeing the king firm in his righteousness, the sage said:
“O King! Your sufferings are due to the sins of your past birth. If you observe the Aja Ekadashi fast of the Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada, then all your sins will be destroyed, and you will attain all happiness.”

According to Sage Gautama’s advice, King Harishchandra observed the fast of Aja Ekadashi with devotion.
- All his sins were destroyed.
- His lost queen and dead son came back to life.
- His kingdom was restored to him, and he ruled happily once again.
🌸 Fruits of Observing the Fast
Sage Pulastya said:

By observing this fast, a person becomes free from all sins and attains the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu.”
