📖 Mythological story of Indira Ekadashi
Dharmaraj Yudhishthira requested Lord Krishna –
"O Lord! Please tell me what is the name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month? What is its method and fruit?"
Lord Krishna said –
"O King! The name of this Ekadashi is Indira Ekadashi. This fast destroys sins and liberates ancestors from degradation and helps them attain heaven. Just by listening to its story, one gets the fruits of Vajpayee Yagya."
The story of King Indrasen of Mahishmati city
In the Satyuga, a mighty and pious king named Indrasen ruled in a city called Mahishmati. He was blessed with sons and grandsons, wealth and was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.
One day, when he was sitting in the court, Devrishi Naradji came there from the sky. King Indrasen got up and welcomed him respectfully and requested him to take a seat.
After asking about his well-being, Naradji said –
"O King! When I went from Brahmalok to Yamlok, I saw your father in the court of Yamraj. He is suffering there due to disruption in Ekadashi fast. Your father has given me a message that if you observe fast on Ashwin Krishna's Indira Ekadashi for me, I will attain heaven."
Hearing this, the king humbly said –
"O Maharshi! Please tell me the method of this fast."
Naradji explained –
- On Dashami Tithi, one should take bath in the morning and perform Shradh for ancestors and eat food once.
- The next day on Ekadashi, one should wake up in Brahmamuhurta, take bath and take a vow to observe fast – O Achyuta! O Pundarikaksha! I am in your refuge, please protect me. Today I will observe fast without eating anything.
- After this, perform Shradh in front of the idol of Lord Vishnu, give food and Dakshina to Brahmins.
- Keep a vigil near the Lord at night and do Bhajan-Kirtan.
- Then worship the Lord in the morning on Dwadashi and feed the Brahmins and eat silently with your family.
Naradji said –
"O King! If you observe this fast with devotion and discipline, then your father will definitely attain heaven."
As per the instructions of Naradji, King Indrasen observed the fast along with his family and servants. As soon as the fast was completed, flowers started raining from the sky and his father rode on Garuda and went to Vishnulok.
King Indrasen also went to heaven after ruling happily for his entire life by giving the kingdom to his son.
