When Dharmaraja Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the significance of the Kartik Krishna Ekadashi fast, Lord Krishna replied that this Ekadashi is known as Rama Ekadashi. This fast should be observed to free oneself from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly. As a result of this fast, the devotee receives the blessings of Lord Vishnu and attains salvation.
The story of Rama Ekadashi is as follows:
King Muchukunda, a renowned religious leader, ruled a city. His daughter Chandrabhaga was married to Shobhan, son of King Chandrasen, who was very frail and could not go without food for even a day.
Once upon a time, Shobhan came to his in-laws' house on the day of Rama Ekadashi. In Muchukunda's kingdom, all the people observed the Ekadashi fast, and no one ate food on that day. Chandrabhaga became worried after seeing Shobhan. Shobhan asked Chandrabhaga how he would survive without food; he would die. His wife told him to go somewhere else. Shobhan said that he would not go anywhere; he would stay here and observe the Rama Ekadashi fast.
As the sun set that day, he was overcome with hunger. The Ekadashi vigil became unbearable for him, and by the next morning, he passed away. The king then performed the last rites of his son-in-law with due rituals. Chandrabhaga continued to live at her father's home. Som Sharma, a Brahmin from King Muchukunda's kingdom, arrived in Shobhan's city, Devpur. Seeing Shobhan, he recognized him as Chandrabhaga's husband. Shobhan told Som Sharma about the virtuous effects of the Rama Ekadashi fast. He said that he had observed the Rama Ekadashi fast without any devotion, and that is why his kingdom, happiness, and prosperity were unstable. He said that he should tell Chandrabhaga about this; her virtue would stabilize it. After returning from there, the Brahmin told Chandrabhaga the whole story.
