Mythological Story

The Sacred Story of Amalaki Ekadashi

In ancient times, there was a prosperous and righteous city named Vaidik. People belonging to all four varnas—Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras—lived there in mutual love and harmony. The sacred sound of Vedic chants always resonated in that city. No sinner, wrongdoer, or atheist resided there; everyone followed righteousness and moral conduct.

The king of that state was Chaitrarath, born in the Chandravansha (lunar dynasty). He was highly learned, religious, and affectionate toward his subjects. In his kingdom, there was no poor or greedy person. All the citizens were devoted followers of Lord Vishnu and observed every Ekadashi fast with devotion and discipline. Amalaki Ekadashi 2026

Once, during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Phalguna, the sacred day of Amalaki Ekadashi arrived. From the king to the elderly and children, the entire population observed the fast with great devotion and enthusiasm. At night, everyone gathered in the temple and stayed awake, singing devotional hymns and listening to stories of the Lord.

That very night, a hunter arrived there. He sustained his family through violence toward animals and was involved in many sinful acts. Tormented by hunger and thirst, he sat in a corner of the temple in search of food. While sitting there, he unintentionally heard the glory of Lord Vishnu and the greatness of Ekadashi. Thus, he too spent the entire night in vigil.

In the morning, everyone returned to their homes. The hunter also went back home and ate food. After some time, he passed away. Although he was destined for severe hell due to his violent deeds, the effect of observing Amalaki Ekadashi and the night vigil granted him a noble rebirth. Amalaki Ekadashi 2026

He was born in the house of King Vidurath and was named Vasurath. As he grew up, he became a brave, righteous, and prosperous king. He possessed a fourfold army and ruled over ten thousand villages.

One day, King Vasurath went to the forest for hunting but lost his way. Exhausted, he fell asleep under a tree. After some time, mountain bandits arrived there. Seeing the king alone, they rushed to kill him and said, “This king punished our relatives and banished us from the country. Today we will take our revenge!”

They began attacking the king with weapons. But astonishingly, their weapons became ineffective upon touching his body and appeared like flowers. Soon, their weapons turned back upon them, causing them to fall unconscious. Amalaki Ekadashi 2026

At that moment, a divine goddess emerged from the king’s body. She was adorned with beautiful garments and ornaments, radiating a brilliant aura. Her brows were arched, and fire-like brilliance shone from her eyes. Within moments, she destroyed all the bandits.

When the king awoke, he saw the dead bandits around him. Astonished, he wondered, “Who protected me?” At that moment, a divine voice from the sky proclaimed:
“O King! Who other than Lord Vishnu could protect you in this world?”

Hearing this, the king bowed respectfully to Lord Vishnu and returned to his kingdom, where he ruled righteously.

Finally, Sage Vashistha said:
“O King! All this is the result of observing the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi. Whoever observes this fast with devotion achieves success in every endeavor and ultimately attains Vaikuntha.”

Thus, the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi frees a person from sins and grants divine grace and the path to liberation.

Method of Observing the Fast: Amalaki Ekadashi 2026

The fast of Amalaki Ekadashi begins with proper discipline from the night of Dashami Tithi. On this day, wake up during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Install an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu in the home temple. Offer yellow clothes, flowers, incense, lamps, and food offerings (naivedya).

After this, worship the Amla tree. Offer water, raw milk, and Ganga water to its trunk. Apply roli (vermilion), offer rice grains and flowers, and light a lamp. Circumambulate the tree and chant the mantras of Lord Vishnu. The chanting of the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” is considered especially fruitful.

On this day, devotees observe a fast. Some keep a Nirjala (waterless) fast, while others consume fruits. The fast is properly concluded on the next day, Dwadashi Tithi, during the prescribed Parana time.Amalaki Ekadashi 2026
