Story of Papmochni Ekadashi
Lord Krishna said to Arjuna:
“O Partha! The Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month is known as Papmochini Ekadashi. Observing this fast destroys even the greatest sins of a person.”
In ancient times, the great king Mandhata asked the same question to the sage Lomash Rishi that you have asked me today. Therefore, I will tell you the same story that Lomash Rishi told King Mandhata.
King Mandhata humbly asked the sage:
“O revered sage! How can a person become free from sins? Please tell a simple method through which people can easily destroy their sins.”
Lomash Rishi replied:
“O King! The Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Chaitra is called Papmochini Ekadashi. By observing this fast, many sins of a person are destroyed.”
In ancient times, there was a beautiful forest named Chaitrarath, where apsaras and celestial beings used to enjoy and roam happily.
In that forest, a sage named Medhavi used to perform intense penance. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.
One day, a beautiful apsara named Manjughosha saw sage Medhavi and decided to disturb his penance.
She sat at some distance, started playing the veena, and began singing in a sweet voice. At that moment, Kamadeva also tried to enchant the sage.
Gradually, sage Medhavi became fascinated by her beauty and music and forgot about his penance.
He completely lost track of time, and 57 years passed.
When he finally realized this, he became angry and cursed Manjughosha to become a demoness.
Feeling sorrowful, the apsara asked for a way to be freed from the curse. The sage then told her that observing the Papmochini Ekadashi fast would free her from the curse.
Both Medhavi Muni and Manjughosha observed this fast, and by its power, all their sins were destroyed.
Lomash Rishi said that listening to or reading this story gives merit equal to donating a thousand cows.
